5. The Woman King (2023)

Viola Davis is General Nanisca, the leader of the formidable fighting force called the Agojie. A celebration of the strength and power of women, The Woman King tells the story of a troop of female warriors who have chosen not to marry, and instead, have decided to dedicate their lives to protect their kingdom.

6. Poor Things (2023)

Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life after receiving the transplant of a baby’s brain, who then leaves home and embarks on a journey of self discovery. For Poor Things, Stone is joined by actors Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef, with her Frankenstein-like mannerisms and performance as Bella Baxter garnering her a well-deserved Oscar in the 96th Academy Awards.

7. Barbie (2023)

The sensational live-action Barbie film directed by Greta Gerwig starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling overtly addresses issues women face in the real world. The story begins with Barbie in the seemingly perfect Barbie Land, of which she eventually ventures out of, and subsequently enters the real world, where a new set of joys and perils abound.

8. Little Women (2019)

Another film directed by Greta Gerwig, the 2019 Little Women movie is a remake of the classic coming-of-age novel, with Emma Watson, Soairse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen acting as the four March sisters. The story revolves around Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as each of them enter womanhood with different dreams, and make big decisions on love and life.

9. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron may be easily brushed off as a dude-flick, but Theron’s character as Furiosa is empowering. In this post-apocalyptic action film, Furiosa is a handicapped soldier who was abducted as a child and serves under the movie’s antagonist, Immortan Joe, but eventually rebels against him for all the right reasons.

10. Roma (2018)

Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, this Oscar-winning film tells the poignant semi-autobiographical tale of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), an indigenous domestic worker, in the Roma neighbourhood of Mexico City in the 1970s. Shot in black-and-white, this compelling masterpiece was created as a love-letter to the women who raised him, and portrays beautifully what it means to be a resilient woman.
