Mayor Eric Adams announced the declaration of April 14, 2025, as Dr B R Ambedkar Day, honouring the legacy of a man who transcended borders through his vision of social justice. The proclamation was made public by Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, during a special event held at the United Nations headquarters.

Historic Celebration At United Nations
The official proclamation was revealed at a commemorative event titled “Timeless Appeal of Ambedkar’s Vision Within the United Nations and Beyond”, organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN. The gathering drew UN diplomats, officials, civil society leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora.
Dr Ramdas Athawale, India’s Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, delivered the keynote address. In his remarks, he stated: “We recognise that the principles Dr Ambedkar fought for—equity, representation, and human rights—are more relevant than ever in our collective effort to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.” Athawale also expressed gratitude to Mayor Adams and Deputy Commissioner Chauhan for honouring Babasaheb’s enduring global legacy.
