Morocco Signs Landmark Agreements for Justice, Equality on International Human Rights Day

Rabat – Morocco is taking major strides to embed human rights values into public policies, with a focus on youth, culture, and gender equality. 

Speaking at a Wednesday event marking International Human Rights Day, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid underlined his ministry’s active efforts to prioritize child protection, foster coexistence, and promote tolerance.

The event, organized by the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights, reflected Morocco’s ongoing efforts to advance social justice and equality. 

Bensaid described the signing of a cooperation framework with the delegation as a significant step toward integrating human rights into government programs. “This partnership marks a new phase in our shared mission to uphold dignity and promote social justice,” he said.  

The gathering also showcased Morocco’s collaboration with international partners in human rights advocacy. UN Resident Coordinator Nathalie Fustier acknowledged the country’s work in addressing discrimination, promoting gender inequality, and fostering a society built on diversity and mutual respect. 

She pointed to Morocco’s partnership with the UN system as an important initiative toward creating an inclusive future where all citizens can thrive.

The event led to several agreements designed to strengthen human rights across various sectors. One notable agreement was between the Ministry of Youth and the Interministerial Delegation focused on promoting human rights education. 

This initiative targets youth, women’s associations, child protection centers, and vocational training institutions, seeking to build awareness and encourage active engagement with human rights principles.  

Another major development was the introduction of a 2025-2027 action plan in collaboration with UN Women. The plan outlines steps to incorporate gender perspectives into the delegation’s programs, conduct gender analyses, and create a roadmap to address systemic inequalities. 

Joint initiatives, such as seminars and workshops, will support these efforts and contribute to broader goals of equity and empowerment. 

While Morocco is making significant strides in promoting human rights, particularly through its focus on youth and gender equality, challenges remain. The integration of youth into society and efforts to combat gender-based violence continue to face obstacles. 

However, despite these issues, there is hope as Morocco takes meaningful steps toward progress. The country’s ongoing commitment to justice, inclusion, and social change as evidenced in these initiatives offers a promising outlook for the future.

In another move toward human rights emancipation, Morocco plans to support the 10th United Nations resolution on the moratorium on the death penalty. 

Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi announced this policy shift during a parliamentary session on Monday, confirming the country’s intention to vote in favor of the resolution at this month’s UN General Assembly.
